Getting kids lunch boxes right is a tricky task!

Trying to find the balance with healthy, yummy and making sure it gets eaten, keeping it fresh and cool and then it most importantly gets them through the day happy.

Here are my tips on how to:

FINDING FOODS

Kids need to be involved in the process of getting lunches organized – even if they suggest some snack or get the snack in their own lunch box.   I have found if they choose the food for themselves they are more inclined to eat it. Talk about they choices they make and why it is a great choice or not. Discuss with them how it makes them feel, sore tummy, busy head or makes them feel full.

HELPING WITH CHOICES

Children love to copy their parents or a mentor of some kind. I know when I am teaching health and food in my classroom, children will listen attentively to every tip I have in regards to food choices however its more what I eat in front of them that makes them want to eat it more.

FOOD AVERSIONS

Not all children will want to eat healthy food or they actually can’t eat certain foods. I too have a child who choices are not exactly what I would suggest. These are due to past food stress- due to reflux, having a plain food palette, being sensory in the mouth and needing smooth or simple foods to eat. This becomes a trickier task and therefore more creativity is required. I have found sweet potato, pumpkin and broccoli mash my savior in all ways – it is smooth, sweet and has the best combination for my picky eater.

KEEPING IT FRESH AT SCHOOL

I only pack my kids lunches into containers or zip lock packs and put them into the genius idea of the ‘PACK IT’ Freezable lunch boxes. These lunch boxes stay cool all day and keep the food fresh, safe and delicious.
